Choosing the Right Finish: Limewash, Microcement, and Roman Clay

Revamping a space in your home is nothing more but a decision away! Like a recipe book, if you’re interested in learning about 3 different paint finishes, be sure to check out GDVD’s quick guide below!

1. Limewash: Rustic Elegance

Limewash is one of the oldest decorative wall finishes, dating back centuries, and it’s loved for its natural, matte look and ability to create subtle color variations across the wall. It is made from crushed limestone mixed with water, which allows it to naturally bond with surfaces like plaster, brick, and stone. Since the texture of limewash paint is created by brush strokes, technique is very important.

2. Microcement: Sleek, Modern, and Durable

Microcement is a cement-based coating that’s applied in thin layers to create a seamless, industrial finish. It’s a versatile option often used on floors, walls, and even countertops to achieve a modern, minimalist look.

3. Roman Clay: Soft, Earthy Texture

Roman clay is a plaster-like finish made from natural materials like lime and clay. It’s typically applied with a trowel to create a smooth, earthy texture with subtle movement and depth. This finish mimics the look of old-world plaster, giving walls an artisanal, handcrafted feel. Roman Clay is a paint/plaster hybrid material intended to be used on smooth interior walls. Roman Clay is applied in thin overlapping layers with a trowel or putty knife being a bit more time-consuming to apply compared to traditional interior paints.

I believe the guide I’ve put together can help you decide your next choice of textured wall design. Make sure to add your details below and you’ll be on your way to download the pdf!
